To draw the characteristic curve of a zener diode and to determine its reverse break down voltage | Physics Practical Class 12 | Gaurav Kumar

To draw the characteristic curve of a Zener diode and to determine its reverse break down voltage.

Aim: -

To draw the characteristic curve of a Zener diode and to determine its reverse break down voltage.

APPARATUS: -

Zener diode, power supply with potential divider, a high resistance rheostat, a voltmeter, a microammeter, connecting wires.

THEORY: -

It is specially type of a diode which is fabricated by heavily doping both p and n - type regions. It is named after its inventor C. Zener. Due to this the depletion region is thin and the junction field is very high, Even for a small revers bias voltage the diode reaches the break down giving a large current called avalanche current.

OBSERVATIONS: -

Least count opf voltmeter                 ........................... V

Zero error in voltmeter                 =      .......................... V

Least count of microammeter      =       ........................   uA

Zero error in microammeter         =      ........................    uA

OBSERVATION TABLE FOR ZENERO VOLTAGE

CALCULATIONS: -

Graph :     Plot a graph between reverse voltage Vr and corresponding reverse current r  choosing suitable scale on X' axis for V r and on Y' axis for I r by using the data of Table. Mark the Zener voltage on the graph.

RESULT: -

1.    The characteristic curve of Zener diode is shown in this figer.

2.    The Zener Voltage = ....................... volt.

PRECAUTIONS: -

1.    All the connections should be made neat, clean and right.

2.    Connections should be made by considering the signs in the circuit diagram.

3.    The Zener diode should be connected in reverse bias.

4.    The voltage should be increased in steps.

5.    Zero error if any in voltmeter and microammeter should be taken into account.
