To find the frequency of the AC mains with a sonometer | Physics Practical Class 12 | Gaurav Kumar.

To find the frequency of the AC mains with a sonometer.

Aim: -

To find the frequency of the AC mains with a sonometer.

APPARATUS: -

A sonometer, Set of tuning forks, 1/2 kg hanger, 1/2 kg slotted weight, and electromagnet with step down transformer, clamp, stand rubber pad etc.

THEORY: -

OBSERVATIONS: -

1.    Length of Wire L    =    .............

2.    Mass of wire m'    =    ..............

3.    Mass per unit Length m     =     ............

4.    Mass of hanger     =    ..............

TABLE FOR RESONANT LENGTH WITH VARYING TENSIONS

Mean value of n    =    ....................... Hertz.

CALCULATION: -

For each set of observation, calculate the value of n. Find the mean of these values of n.

The frequency of a.c. supply, (f)    =    mean value of n / 2

PRECAUTIONS: -

1.    The sonometer wire should be magnetic, free from kinks and stretched horizontally.

2.    The pole of the electromagnet should be held quite close to the middle of the vibrating segment.

3.    The position of maximum amplitude should be judged at least twice for each load.

4.    While finding resonant length, start with a small distance between the wedges.

5.    The weight of the hanger should also be counted while calculating the stretching force (i.e. the                tension.

T    =    Mg in the string).

6.    After completing the experiment, weights should be removed from the hanger, Never leave the wire         in a stretched condition.
