To detect the acid and basic radicals in given salt (In Magnesium Sulphate).

Experiment – 9

Class – XII

Subject – Chemistry

Aim:-

To detect the acid and basic radicals in given salt (In Magnesium Sulphate).

Apparatus:-

Test tube, test tube stand, test tube holder, burner, beaker, litmus paper, match box etc.

Physical Characteristic:-

1.     State: - solid crystalline

2.     Color:- Colorless

3.     Odour:- No specific odour

4.     Solubility:-  Soluble in cold water

Detection of Acid Radicals

Sr. No

Experiment

Observation

Inference

1.

Heating with dil. H2So4

Take the pinch of salt & dil. H2So4 was added.

No gas evolved

Co3-, So3-, S2- No2- CH3COO-  ions absent

2.

Heating with conc. H2So4

The salt was heated with conc. H2So4.

No gas evolved

Cl-, Br-, I-, No3- absent

Test for So42-  Ion

a.

BaCl2 test

To pinch aqua solution salt BaCl2 was added.

A white ppt was formed which was insoluble in dill. HCl

So42-  ion was confirmed

So42-  + BaCl2    à    BaSo4 + 2 Cl -

b.

Lead acetate test

To aqua solution of salt acetic acid & lead acetate was add.

A white ppt obtained

So42-  ion was confirmed

So42- + Pb (COOCH3)2    à     Pb So4   + 2 CH3COO-

Detection of Basic Radicals:-

Sr. No.

Experiment

Observation

Inference

a.

O.S. was added with dil. HCl.

No PPT was observed

Group I radical absent

b.

O.S. was added with dil. HCl and H2S was passed.

No PPT obtained

Group II radical absent

c.

O.S. was added with NH4Cl heated & Cooled & then added with excess NH4OH.

No PPT was obtained

Group III radical absent

d.

O.S. was added with NH4Cl and NH4OH followed by H2S gas.

No PPT was observed

Group IV  absent

e.

To the O.S. a small quantity of solid NH4Cl as added then boiled & cooled & NH4OH was added then (NH4)2 Co3 solutions added.

No PPT obtained

Group V absent

Confirmatory test:-

1.

Test for Mg2+ ion

Ammonium phosphate test

To O.S. some solid NH4Cl & NH4OH in slight excess was added then ammonium phosphate solution was added.

White ppt was obtained

Mg2+ Confirmed

Mg2+ + HPo42- + NH4+       à     Mg (NH4)  Po4 + H +

Conclusion:-

On the basis of above test, we conclude that given salt contain.

Acid Radical:            So42-

Basic Radical:           Mg2+

S. No.
