To detect the acid and basic radicals in given salt

(In Barium Nitrate).

Experiment – 8

Class – XII

Subject – Chemistry

Aim:-

To detect the acid and basic radicals in given salt (In Barium Nitrate).

Apparatus:-

Test tube, test tube stand, test tube holder, burner, beaker, litmus paper, match box etc.

Physical Characteristic:-

1.     State: - solid crystalline

2.     Color:- Colorless

3.     Odour:- No specific odour

4.     Solubility:-  Soluble in cold water

Detection of Acid Radicals

Sr. No

Experiment

Observation

Inference

1.

Heating with dil. H2So4

Take the pinch of salt & dil. H2So4 was added.

No gas evolved

Co3-, So32-, S2- No2-  ions absent

2.

Copper chips test

Small quantity of O.S. was added and heated with conc. H2So4 and copper turning.

No gas evolved

Cl-, Br-, I-, No3-, CH3COO-  absent

2KNo3 + H2So4    à      K2So4 + 2 HNo3

4HNo3 + Co    à      Cu [No3]2  + 2 No2  + 2 H2O   ( Reddish brown)

Confirmatory Test

a.

Ring Test

A small quantity of freshly prepared solution of ferrous sulphate was added to a  part of the qua solution and then conc. H2So4 was poured slowly along the sides of the test tube.

A dark brown ring was formed at the function of the larger of the acid and solution.

No3- was confirmed

KNo3 + H2So4     à       KHSo4 + HNo3

6 FeSo4 + 2 H2So4     à    2 HNo3   à   3 Fe2 (So4)3 + H2O + 2No

FeSo4 + No + SH2O   à   [Fe (No) (H2O)5 So4]   brown ring

Detection of Basic Radicals:-

Sr. No.

Experiment

Observation

Inference

a.

O.S. was added with dil. HCl.

No PPT was observed

Group I radical absent

b.

O.S. was added with dil. HCl and H2S was passed.

No PPT obtained

Group II radical absent

c.

O.S. was added with NH4Cl heated & Cooled & then added with excess NH4OH.

No PPT was obtained

Group III radical absent

d.

O.S. was added with NH4Cl and NH4OH followed by H2S gas.

No PPT was observed

Group V radical absent

e.

To the O.S. a small quantity of solid NH4Cl as added then boiled & cooled & NH4OH was added then (NH4)2 Co3 solutions added.

White PPT observed

Ba2+, Sr2+, Ca2+ were present

Confirmatory test:-

1.

Potassium Chromate test

The ppt was dissolved in hot dil. Acetic acid & K2Cr O4 added.

Yellow ppt was observed.

Ba2+ Confirmed

BaCo3 + 2 CH3 COOH    à     Ba (COOCH3)2 + H2O + Co2

Ba [ COOCH3]2 + K2 Cr O4  à  Ba Cr O4 + 2 CH3 COOK ( Yellow ppt)

Flame Test

A paste of salt was prepared with conc. HCl & flame test was performed.

Apple green flame was observed

Ba2+ Confirmed

Conclusion:-

On the basis of above test, we conclude that given salt contain.

Acid Radical:            No3-

Basic Radical:           Ba2+

S. No.
