To detect the acid and basic radicals in given salt (In Strontium chloride).

Experiment – 5

Class – XII

Subject – Chemistry

Aim:-

To detect the acid and basic radicals in given salt (In Strontium chloride).

Apparatus:-

Test tube, test tube stand, test tube holder, burner, beaker, litmus paper, match box, watch glass etc.

Physical Characteristic:-

1.     State: - solid crystalline

2.     Color:- Colorless

3.     Odour:- No specific color

4.     Solubility:- Soluble in both cold water.

Detection of Acid Radicals

Sr. No

Experiment

Observation

Inference

1.

Dry heating effect

The salt was heated in a test tube

Yellowish green gas was evolved with pungent smell.

Cl- may be present

2.

Heating with Conc. H2So4

The salt was heated with conc. H2So4

Colorless gas was evolved with a pungent + smell

Cl- may be present

Confirmatory Test

(a)

Silver Nitrate Tests

To the aqua solution of salt silver nitrate was added

White ppt was obtained which is soluble in ammonia

Cl- ion confirmed

NaCl + AgNo3         à      AgCl + NaNo3      (white ppt)

AgCl + 2 NH4 OH     à     [Ag (NH3)] Cl + 2 H2O         (Soluble complex)

(b)

Chromyl Chloride Test

A small quantity of salt was added with chromyl chloride and conc. H2So4 and then it was added the evolved gas was passed through NaOH solution.

Yellow ppt was obtained

Cl- confirmed.

4 NaCl + K2 Cr2 O7 + 6 H2So4    à    4 NaHS4 + 2 Cr2Cl2 + 2 KHSo4 + 3H2O

Cr O2 Cl2  + 4 NaOH   à    No2 Cr O4  + 2 H2O + NaCl   (Sodium Chromate)

No2 Cr O4  + (CH3 COO)2 Pb  à  Pb Cr O4 + 2 CH3 COONa (Yellow PPT)

Detection of Basic Radicals:-

Sr. No.

Experiment

Observation

Inference

1.

1.  The O.S. was added with dil. HCl.

2. O.S. was added with dil. HCl & H2S gas was passed.

3.  O.S. was added with NH4Cl heated, cooled and then added with excess NH4OH.

4.  O.S. was added with NH4Cl  & NH4 OH followed by H2 gas.

5.  O.S. was added with NH4Cl heated cooled & added with NH4O and (NH4)2 Co3.

No PPT was formed.

No PPT was obtained.

No PPT was obtained.

No PPT was Obtained

White PPT was obtained.

Group I radical absent.

Group II radical absent.

Group III radical absent.

Group IV  radical absent

Group V radical present.

Analysis of Group V

Dissolved a part of white not in dil acetic acid and divided into three part.

1.     The first we added K2Cr2O7

2.     The second part (NH4)2 So4 salt was added.

3.     Flame test was conducted.

No PPT
