To distinguish between Aldehyde & Ketonic group in the given compound A & B.

Experiment – 13

Class – XII

Subject – Chemistry

Aim:-

To distinguish between Aldehyde & Ketonic group in the given compound A & B.

Apparatus:-

Test tube, test tube stand, test tube holder, burner, beaker, litmus paper, match box, watch glass etc.

Test for Aldehyde Group

Sr. No

Experiment

Observation

Inference

1.

Schiff’s Test:

The given compound was dissolved in clean test tube and schiff’s reagent was added.

Pink, red or mogrda color was appeared in compound A

Aldehyde group confirmed

2.

Tollen’s test:

Silver nitrate solution was placed in test tube and dil. NaOH was also added to form brown ppt dil. Ammonia solution was added intial the brown ppt dissolve the given liquid was added and test tube was wormed.

A shiny mirror was appeared in compound A

Aldehyde group confirmed

2Ag (NH3)2 + RCHO + 3 OH-    à    RCOO- + 2 Ag + 4 NH3

3.

Fehling ‘s  test:

A small amount of fehling ‘s solution was taken in test tube and given organic compound was added and test tube was warmed.

A red ppt was appeared in compound A

Carboxylic acid [-COOH] group confirmed

RCHO + 2 Cu2+ + SOH-  à   Cu2 O (S) + RCOO- + 3 H2O

Test for Ketonic Experiment

4.

Sodium Nitroprosside Test:

A crystal of salt nitroprosside was dissolved in water & few drops of NaOH solution added & organic compound was also added.

Red color was appear in compound B

Ketonic group confirmed

CH3COCH3 + OH-   à  CH3COCH2- + H2O

[FeC (N)5 No]2-  + CH3 COCH2  à [FeC(N)5 NO. CH3 COCH2]3-

Conclusion:

On the basis of above test we  conclude that compound A contain –CHO group whereas compound B contain R – C = 0 group.
