To find refractive index of water using a concave mirror | Physics Practical Class 12 | Gaurav Kumar

To find refractive index of water using a concave mirror.

Aim: -

To find refractive index of water using a concave mirror.

APPARATUS: -

Concave mirror, a vertical stand with clamp, pin, meter scale.

THEORY: -

PROCEDURE: -

1.    Clean the concave mirror and place it on the horizontal surface.

2.    Clamp the needle on the stand in such a position that it lies above the mirror on its principle axis.

3.    Adjust the needle so that then is no parallax between the needle and its image. Let the position be 'C'.

4.    Measure the distance between the tip of the needle and the pole of the mirror.

5.    Pour a small quantity of water into the mirror and again find the position of no parallax by lowering the needle. Note the reading.

6.    Repeat the experiment and take a number of readings.

OBSERVATIONS: -

RESULT: -

The refractive index of water =    ....................

PRECAUTIONS: -

1.    Parallax should be removed tip to tip.

2.    Mirror used should be of large radius of curvature.

3.    Distance should be measured from the center of mirror and not from surface of water.

4.    Needle should be kept horizontal and principle axis should be vertical.
