SECTION –A: READING (20 Marks)

Read the passage below and answer the questions that follow:

1.Heat wave in India occurs mostly in patches and in few states at a time. However, this time  around, heatwave conditions have not only occurred early but also simultaneously in a large chunk  of the country.

2.Yes, it is true that heatwave conditions are being witnessed only in few pockets of a particular  state but almost in all the states of East, Central and Peninsular India.

3.At present, heat wave conditions are prevailing in pockets of Maharashtra, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Karnataka. Temperatures continue to break records at several places and accordingly, the death toll has touched at least 130. 4.The inbuilt characteristic of heat wave is that it only occurs in pockets and not in an entire region  or state.

5. April, May and June are the hottest months in India with Summer season peaking in May, in most  parts of the country. June is the onset month of Southwest Monsoon when summer-like conditions  leave Peninsular and Central India but remains in North India.

6. Heatwave is all pervasive and a major phenomenon in India, claiming hundreds of lives every year.  Heat comes in spurts and lasts for not more than 5 to 7 days as it is also the season for thundershowers. Heat wave percent is more prominent in the interiors of the country. Hilly regions,  Northeast India and coastal stations generally do not witness heatwave conditions.

7.In plains, temperatures should exceed 40°C for declaring heatwave but in the coastal stations 40°C  would amount to tremendously hot weather if maximum touches the 40-degree mark. Even this  criteria has been overruled this year as Chandbali, a coastal station in Odisha exceeded 40°C. Few  coastal stations in Andhra Pradesh have also seen the mercury rise above 40°C. All in all, we can say  that 2016 is turning out to be exceptionally hot and oppressive.

8.For coastal stations and other places, if the day temperature rises 5°C above normal irrespective of  reaching 40°C, we call it a hot day. Therefore, on a general note, heat wave prevails in the interiors  and hot days in the coastal area.

9.In Delhi-NCR, temperatures have been a little above normal for the last few days. For now,  temperatures will continue showing a gradual rise, amounting to heat wave in pockets. However, some relief will come by Sunday onwards. No relief likely in other parts of the country. In fact,  heatwave conditions will accentuate in Maharashtra and Karnataka and continue as it is in Gangetic  West Bengal, Odisha, Bihar and Jharkhand.

10. Weeks of relentless heatwave in India is getting worse. Within a span of five days, the deadly weather has claimed more than 30 lives in southern and eastern part of the country. Temperatures that are hotter than normal for April have caused 55 heat related deaths in Odisha, around 45 in Andhra Pradesh and more than 60 in Telangana during this month.

11. While schools have been shut in Odisha, Telangana and other parts of India where deadly heat refuses to abate, severe water shortage and drought-like conditions in parts of Maharashtra still persist. Heatwave continues to sweep many parts of India due to which the death toll has risen to 130 from 111 in a span of one week. Almost 100 people have died in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh due to heatwave conditions till now, while sunstroke has claimed 30 lives in Odisha. Central and Peninsular India continues to witness the hottest April as temperatures in parts of Maharashtra, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema and Telangana have remained beyond 40°C in last ten days. The temperature touched 44° Celsius in three Telangana districts on Thursday, a day after Hyderabad broke a 43-year record with mercury reaching the 43°C level. In Odisha, Cuttack, Khurda, Balasore and Titlargarh have been hit worst with the mercury hovering around 42 for past few days. Dry weather is likely to prevail parts of Central and East India due to which maximum temperature is likely to settle between 42 and and 45 degrees Celsius.

1. Do I want fame like Shahrukh khans? Do I want success like Sachin Tendulkar’s? Do I want beauty  like Aishwariya Rai’s? Do I want intelligence like Dr. Kalam’s ? Do I compassion like Mother Teresa’s?  Do I want power and courage like Kiran Bedis ? Do I want to be a good human being like my parent’s  are? Or do I want to be just myself?

2. These are some questions that flit between our conscious mind. Such questions help us choose  our ideal persona. The choice determines our oneness with that ‘other, which we generally call role  model. Although it has come to have a variety of connotations-from a source of inspiration to a  social icon-the phrase quite literally means a model for a role, a person one can strive to emulate.  For example Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam is more than a name- it is a symbol of dreaming big, realizing those dreams and inspiring others to do so. Dr. Kalam is not just a huge success-the son of a fishing boat  owner went on to become a rocket scientist and then the president of India-but he also embodies  the right values. In short, a role model in everyway.

3. Children choose role models for themselves as early as the pre-school years, according to a theory  of Dr. Amy Beth Taublieb, a clinical psychologist. The type of model changes with the development  level of the child. It is the youth, with the unlimited possibilities of the future beyond them, who are  influenced by the people that inspire them to fly high.

4. Today’s role models are associated with money, beauty and fame. Actors and rock stars have  become the center of attention as our heroes in the 21’ century. But a good role model is someone  we should want to be like because we see value in his or her actions.

5.The role models people choose reflect the type of values they have and the society They have and the society they will create.

6.We often do not recognize our true role models until we have noticed our own personal growth.  Thus, we need to keep the following points in mind before defining Our source of inspiration: 7.Choose someone who has a lot of confidence in himself herself and in his/her abilities. A good role  model would be someone who knows who he or she is. You do not want role models who would  pretend to be something they are not, and would fake a personality to suit others. Choose someone  who thinks it is alright to be unique, even if that means facing some ridicule. They should make you  feel good about being yourself; they should not make you Compare yourself to them and wish you  were prettier or richer. Choose someone who is kind and can communicate with people. Look for  someone who is living life the way you would like to. If you want to be a Famous author, your role  model could be someone who is a success at writing. With these points plus our intuition or faith, we  can create a picture of the ideal self That we really aspire to be. Then we just need to take one step  forward to close the gap Between the ideal self and the real self.
